Lot 2243

Great Britain. Half crown, 1658. S.3227A. Oliver Cromwell. Draped bust of the Lord Protector facing left. Reverse: Crowned shield and the legend PAX QUAERITUR BELLO (Peace is Sought by War!) Exquisitely toned in shades of deep grey and blue, this spectacular coin, graded MS64, is the Terner specimen. We have only seen one Cromwell halfcrown which is ever so marginally better and that (MS65) example fetched $15,525 (lot 1926, Ira and Larry Goldberg sale June 2004). All Cromwell Halfcrons are now regarded as specimens or limited issue patterns but hardly any have survived in this lofty state of preservation. PCGS graded MS-64.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,500.

Realized $7,188
