1803 S-263 R3 PCGS graded AU58. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown with traces of lustrous tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. A virtually flawless beauty with just a touch of friction on the highpoints. The best identifying marks are two tiny specks of dirt inside the 0 in the date, a tiny rim nick over the right edge of the E in AMERICA, and a microscopic planchet chip under the first 0 in the denominator (as struck). This cent offers solid mint state eye appeal. MDS, Breen state III. The die crack up to the right from the bust tip is clear and the crack through the fraction is faint, but there is no crack through the base of the date. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#2 of the confirmed examples in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors, his photo #21084. Our grade is AU50+ Choice, very close to AU55 (AU55 is the grade assigned by Noyes in his 1991 reference on the cents of 1793-1814). Comes with a great provenance.
