1872 $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. Housed in PCGS holder 10936789. Sporting an original Proof total of only 30 pieces and a pitiable rate of survival, this quarter eagle must be rated among the finest certified survivors of its issue. The gorgeous, Gem-fresh orange-gold surfaces display a mottled milky-haze that interacts with the reflectivity of the smooth fields, although we note that this coin readily reveals its gleaming Proof qualities when one examines it under suitable illumination. The strike is free of criticism, commendably so and razor-sharp, clearly a tribute to its former owners; the few light hairlines that preclude a full Proof 66 designation hardly impinge on this specimen's incredible detail or eye appeal. 30 proofs minted.
