Lot 218

1803 S-257 R2 Small Date, Large Fraction PCGS graded MS63+ Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive lustrous golden tan and light steel brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and traces of faded mint red showing on the reverse. The only mark on the obverse is a faint diagonal hairline scratch off the lower end of the hair ribbon. The reverse has a few tiny spots of reddish brown toning around TE in UNITED and there is another spot of dark toning inside the E in AMERICA. Otherwise this cent is choice and the eye appeal remains excellent. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II early. The die cracks through the E in UNITED and F in OF are present, but the one through the first S in STATES is not present. Clear die clashmarks are visible on both sides. A beautiful example of the Small Date with Large Fraction type. Graded MS62 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21279. Bland says MS61 and CC#3 among the confirmed examples in his census. Our grade is MS62+. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
