Salk, Jonas - Letter From the Polio Pioneer to a Father: "Yours is the ultimate grief…." (1914-94) American researcher and virologist; famous for discovering the first polio vaccine. He never patented the vaccine or earned any money from his discovery, preferring that it be distributed to as many people as possible. Typed letter signed "Jonas Salk" one page, on letterhead of "The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, 9¾ x 7¾", San Diego, CA, Sept. 19, 1968. Slighly folded in at bottom and right, two tiny tape remnants at lower corners, and a couple of pen marks at lower left.

A poignant letter to Mr. George F. Berstler, Jr., whose son is dying, possibly from polio:"Yours is the ultimate grief--I hope you can take heart from the knowledge that one day other fathers will be spared because of what is being learned from cases such as that of your son. I would hope, moreover, you will be comforted by your life together, brief as it may be, knowing you did the very best you could in all respects…." Estimate Value $300 - 400

Realized $264
