Lot 217

1786 Vermont Ryder-9 Baby Head Rarity-3 PCGS graded VF30. Slightly glossy chocolate brown and steel with subtle puffs of lighter brown toning on the reverse. There are a few planchet flaws, as nearly always seen on this variety, with the largest of these located behind the head. No corrosion or verdigris, and the only notable contact mark is a relatively strong pinch on the rim over the right side of the N in INDE, and this mark caused a minor bulge on the opposite edge at the bottom of the obverse. The lower half of the date is off the planchet but the reminder is clear and the legends are easily readable. Struck with the reverse rotated 90 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Not perfect but still quite nice for the popular Baby Head variety. And it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Roper-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Listed on page 74 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $750 - UP
Ex John L. Roper, Stack's 12/1983:321-John Royse, Stack's Bowers 11/16/2012:6091-Gene Heard Collection (includes the Heard sale lot ticket and an old collection envelope from French's).

Realized $2,350
