Great Britain. Kings of Wessex. AR Penny, ND (Uncertain mint, struck south of the Thames). North-625; S-1057. 1.17 grams. Ælfred the Great, 871-899 AD. Lunette - Burgred type. Stylized diademed, draped bust right; +AELBRED REX around. Reverse: Inscription in three lines: MON / ETA in upper and lower lunette registers, with flanking pellets; in central: +DVDD. Good full strike on better metal. Attractive, even gray to silvery gray toning. Some mint luster evident. Very Rare 1st coinage, imitating the Burgred issues. Among the finest known examples of this mysterious and elusive coinage. NGC graded AU-58.
