1856. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Boldly struck as expected for a Proof, but this one is really sharp. Curiously all known 1856 dimes struck in proof are doubled dies, with doubling seen on the lower skirt edge and shield. The obverse and revers are bathed in lovely blue and russet toning. Only 50 pieces struck, with about 30 to 40 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. with the Cameo contrast seen here there are no more than five or six examples known, and this is one of the best seen. A rare early proof that is seldom offered and this one is near the very top of those around.Pop 5; 1 finer in 68 Cameo. Estimated Value $9,000 - UP
