Lot 210

1853. No arrows. NGC graded MS-68. A prized rarity and long held as a key date issue without the arrows at date. This example is one of the absolute finest known, with a monumental MS-68 grade and incredible russet and blue toning from decades in an album. The surfaces are virtually "as struck" with no signs of handling or abuse. The devices and fields retain their full vibrancy subdued by the years of glorious toning. An amazing opportunity to buy a coin that will be a major highlight in any advanced collection.

A wonderful example. These were struck in the opening weeks of 1853, before Congress acted to reduce the silver content of coinage from the half dimes through half dollars. This was done to bring the bullion value of these pieces back below their stated coin values. The value of silver had risen dramatically in the late 1840s with the massive California Gold Rush which caused the price of gold to come down a tad compared to silver. A slight adjustment to the coins weight brought them back to circulation, but not before countless 1853 and prior dated silver coins were melted for a small profit. Hence survivors from this era are few and far between, especially ones that look like this extraordinary gem. Only 95,000 struck. Pop 5; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimated Value $12,000 - UP

Realized $11,400
