Lot 197

(1663-72) Saint Patrick Halfpenny Vlack 5-D, Breen-199 PCGS graded VF20. Type with Medium Letters on the obverse. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown fading to olive brown in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and this piece offers excellent eye appeal. No marks, planchet flaws, or verdigris, only even wear on both sides. The brass "splasher" on the crown is large and obvious. The St Patrick coppers were (most likely) struck in Dublin and transported to America by Mark Newby in 1681 for use in the colonies. The New Jersey General Assembly passed a resolution in May of 1682 making these coppers legal tender in the colony, and they have been associated with New Jersey since then. The obverse shows a crowned king (David?) playing a harp and Saint Patrick is depicted on the reverse. An attractive example of the halfpenny denomination, which is considerably more scarce than the farthing denomination of the type. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Listed on page 43 of the "Redbook." Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
Ex John Agre (CoinRaritiesOnline) 8/4/2012-Gene Heard Collection.
