Lot 1933
1906. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Star. A glorious Superb Gem Proof glittering with untoned brilliance. The cameo devices are virtually flawless as are the brilliant fields. Only 160 Proofs struck. Absolutely gorgeous mint color and surfaces here. Sleek gold mirror fields reflected the polish from the dies perfection, and maintained with loving care ever since, 115 years to be precise! The devices too, are well frosted by the dies, including the stars and date as well as the lettering, enough so to earn the valued "cameo" designation from NGC. Of course the strike has to be perfect, with no weak areas whatsoever since Proofs were struck on the Mint’s hydraulic press (not the usual electrically operated one used for everyday strikes). Proof mintage for the year was on a par with other dates after the turn of the 20th century, but not too many considering a few may have been spent or lost over the years, or otherwise mishandled. No one knows for certain but many things were chipping away at the number available for collectors. Here is a high end gem for the specialist. Pop 4; 3 in PF-68 (PCGS # 87932) . Estimated Value $20,000 - 24,000.
