Lot 1917

Russia. Paul I (1754-1801). Son of Catherine the Great. He inaugurated some reforms in the treatment of serfs and provoked the hostility of the nobility and the army. He joined the Second Coalition against France (1798) and his army aided in expelling the French from northern Italy (1799). In 1800-01 he participated in the organization of the northern maritime league of Russia, Sweden, and Denmark against Great Britain. He was assassinated.

Document Signed as Czar of Russia, February 28, 1797, Saint Petersburg, 1 page, 9 x 7¼ in. Written in Russian on stationery with a black mourning border (his mother had died less than four months earlier), to Lord Hof-Marshall Count (Tisenhausen), regarding payments for repair and maintenance of palaces and gardens; all supervisors are to report to the count, who is to report to Paul. Light toning, else fine. With translation.
