1921 Morgan Dollar. Zerbe. PCGS graded Proof 62. A hint of light gold toning. Lightly toned with some hairlines, also a small curved lint mark on the cheek. The origin of the Zerbe Proof Morgan dollars can be found in the Mint's delay in issuing the new Peace Dollars in a timely fashion. To appease the influential ANA member, Farran Zerbe, the Mint agreed to strike a limited number of "Proof" 1921 Morgan dollars at the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints which Zerbe could distribute to his friends. (The word Proof in describing the Zerbe specimens is proper since these are more carefully made than the business strikes of 1921.) Bowers (in his 1993 encyclopedia) suggests that the 24 Zerbe Proofs struck at the San Francisco Mint preceded those of the Philadelphia Mint, the exact mintage from the latter facility being unknown. Numismatists generally agree the Zerbe Proofs are almost always viewed with awe and reverence by silver dollar collectors, as well they might be. Pop 12; 63 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7341) .
