Lot 1845

c. 225-217 BC. AE As (257.76 g; 60 mm) struck at Rome. Bearded head of Janus. Reverse: Prow of galley right; above, denomination. Cr. 35/1; T & V 51; Syd. 71. Splendid blue-green patina; Choice Very Fine.

The early bronze coinage of the early Roman Republic was cast in moulds - they were too large to strike in the usual manner. This particular specimen could well have been unearthed in Sicily, for its beautiful blue-green patination reveals its having rested in volcanic soil common to this historically important island.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.

Realized $1,668
