About 30% mint red visible on this early coin from Hawaii. People sometimes ask, how did Hawaii conduct business with a coinage consisting only of copper coins. But the fact is, silver and gold coins of the world as they passed through this growing trade hub, were accepted for day to day transactions. It could have remained that way but for a later Monarch, David Kalakaua, who desired to promote his own stewardship as head of state by placing his effigy on the money (PCGS # 10966) .
