1904 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 63 PQ. A well struck example with intense flashy mirror surfaces with excellent contrast. Only 98 minted. The 1904 is a rare striking in Proof format, struck four years before the end of the Liberty head format was replaced. There is no way of knowing the exact survival ratio of Proof 1904 double eagles, one may guess but never be certain. However, it is presumably very small, as Proof $20 coins were sometimes spent by unemployed collectors in the worst period of the Great Depression. This is a deeply reflective example that shows light cameo contrast against the frosted devices. Only the slightest hairlines are visible and confirm the grade.
