Reverse: mIXΛHL S C-OHSτΛHτIn (S's retrograde), Crowned bust of Michael II facing, holding patriarchal cross and akakia. DOC 33a; SB 1683. An extreme rarity . Extremely Fine.
There are two types of these slightly debased solidi of Theophilus struck at a mainland mint in Italy (probably Naples). The first issue, struck 829-ca. 831, shows the facing bust of Theophilus on the obverse, and a patriarchal cross set on three steps on the reverse. The second, of which this coin is an example, depicts Theophilus on the obverse, and either Michael II or Constantine on the reverse (Grierson, Byzantine Coins p. 186, identifies the figure as Constantine but provides no explanation).
