Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 122

Lot 176

1848 N-44 R5+ G6. Mostly glossy olive brown and chocolate. No defects, just some removable dirt. Extremely rare LDS, die state c late, with a strong die crack through the top of ME in AMERICA to the dentils over the adjacent letters. The section of the die outside the crack clearly has shifted outward. The crack is considerably stronger than the crack on the slightly inferior example in the famous Daniel Holmes Collection (lot 328 in our 1/30/2011 sale). A neat die state, tied with one other piece for the latest seen among only four seen in the late die state, and perhaps a precursor for an (as yet) undiscovered cud break. Estimated Value $250 - UP
Henry T. Hettger, Goldbergs 2/2018:541 ($411)-the RES Collection.

Realized $180
