Lot 17

1823 N-2 R2 Normal Date AU55. Lustrous chocolate and steel brown with lighter brown toning covering the right side of the obverse. Overtones of light bluish steel toning show on both sides, especially on the left side of the obverse. The fields and protected areas are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Just a touch of friction show on the highest points of the devices. The best identifying marks, and they are not at all distracting, are a small spot of darker toning in the field close to the throat, another off the upper right point of star 6, and a microscopic pit under the first T in STATES. Sharply struck E-MDS showing a rim cud break from star 4.5 to star 5 and a smaller one above star 6. A premium example of a date that is extremely difficult to find in high grade. The undisputed key to a high-grade "Redbook" set of middle date large cents. Called AU55 and tied for CC#6 honors in the Noyes census, his photo # 56019. Removed from a PCGS slab graded AU58. Now housed in a PCGS MS62 BN holder. (PCGS # 36757).
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
