Lot 1647

1902 $20 Liberty PCGS Proof 63. PCGS graded Proof 63 PQ. CAC Approved. Only 114 minted and this is the first year of the "all brilliant" style of Proofs after years of seeing highly frosted devices which created a number of Cameo or Deep Cameo coins, the 1902 issue offered a more uniform brilliant style with little contrast between the devices and reflective fields. In fact, PCGS has only grade a couple of coins as having the Cameo appearance for this date, and virtually all other 1902 Proof double eagles lack this contrasting feature. Nevertheless, this is how these coins were struck, and this is one of the finer examples which offers excellent orange-gold color, booming reflectivity and strong visual appeal. The number that survived is likely in the 45 pieces range quite low considering the mintage of 114 pieces. PR-63 is right at the middle of the bell curve for this issue as well, with several graded slightly higher, but perhaps even more graded in lower grades including circulated, mishandled examples. A rare issue and important coin that displays the change in proof format for the Philadelphia Mint rather well. Pop 9; 12 finer, 10 in 64, 1 in 65, 1 in 66+ (PCGS # 9118) Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000
