Lot 1640

1924-D. PCGS graded MS-64+ PQ. Lovely rich orange toning on both sides with hints of greenish gold iridescence and the usual sharp strike. This date and mint suffered greatly from the melting of gold coins beginning in 1933. Most of the Denver Mint coins stayed close to home and few were sent overseas where they had an excellent chance to survive in European banks. Thus certain dates and issues are plentiful, others are downright rare, especailly the branch mint coins from the 1920s and early 1930s. Some of these dates were almost entirely wiped out such as the 1927-D. Literally a few random coins that were saved are all that are left to represent that issue, and the 1924-D is represented by about 1,000 coins today, but over 3 million were struck! The balance melted. This is one of the finer examples known today and a coin that would grace any advanced collection with its purchase. Pop 7; 11 finer, 7 in 65, 1 in 65+, 3 in 66 (PCGS # 9178) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.

Realized $14,100
