Lee, George Washington Custis -- Washington College Diploma Signed by R.E. Lee's Eldest Son (1832-1913) Eldest son of Robert E. Lee and Mary Anna Custis Lee; grandson of George Washington Custs, who was the step-grandson and adopted son of George Washington. Partly-printed document signed "GWC Lee" as president of Washington College, 12¾ x 13¾", June 22, 1871, less than a year after the death of Robert E. Lee, who had served as president of the college, which was renamed Washington and Lee University in his honor. A diploma for Talbot Bartlett, countersigned by numerous trustees and the rector. Manuscript portion is very light. Very good. Housed in a 14¼ x 17" folio. Estimate Value $150 - UP
