Lot 163

1848 N-31 R3 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive lustrous mint red fading to light olive brown and steel on the devices, more than a third of the original mint color remaining on both sides. This cent offers great eye appeal and the surfaces are nearly flawless. The notable marks are a tiny struck-through line on the cheek right of the mouth (as struck) and a small nick over the E in CENT, and neither mark is visible to the unaided eye. MDS, die state c, with two dentils fused by crumbling over the R in AMERICA and extensive sinking around the legend outside the wreath. The always present lump on the rim over the left side of the U is obvious. This cent is graded MS65 by Del Bland. Our grade is MS64+, very close to MS65, and tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest graded of the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $1,500-UP

Ex Kenneth Goldman-Denis Loring (from his date set)-Herman Halpern, Stack's 3/16/1988:619-Dr. Philip W. Ralls-Ralls Estate, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/2014:849-Fred Iskra Collection (includes the Ralls collection envelope and both lot tickets).
