Lot 1579

1879-O. PCGS graded EF-45. CAC. Premium Quality. Well struck. A nice example with lots of luster visible on both sides. Only 2,325 pieces issued for circulation. From that perhaps 150 exist today, and this is one of the nicer examples. There are only a couple of low end Uncs, the rest of those known are circulated to some degree. This is also an outlier of a New Orleans issue, as the previous double eagle was the 1861-O struck just as the Civil War began, then no double eagles were struck in New Orleans until this 1879-O issue. Then production of double eagles halted again, this time permanently. Production of Eagles did occur from time to time until the Mint was closed a few decades later. Hence, this one issue is extremely popular with New Orleans collectors and date specialists for its status as the final double eagle from this mint. Pop 17; 10 in 50; 7 in 53; 7 in 55; 7 in 58; 2 in 60; 1 in 62. This example will one day be in an Almost Uncirculated 50 holder. Just sent to PCGS for the first time (PCGS # 8990) Estimated Value $60,000 - UP
Ex The Dr. George Elanjian Collection.

Realized $63,000
