Lot 1568

1871-CC. PCGS graded EF-45. Only 17,387 struck. A popular key date "CC" mint Double Eagle. Pop 48; 42 finer. This is the second toughest of the Carson City dates behind the coveted 1870-CC $20. Approximately 200-220 are known today, with the vast majority of those in the EF or lower grade category. Finding an example of this date is the challenge, and here is a solid, high end EF that will satisfy any advanced collector. This is a numismatic classic in any grade, and will elevate the most advanced collection with its acquisition.

Purchased in the 1960s and held by this family until now. Some luster visible in the protected areas of the fields. A nice example for the given grade as there is just a whisper of wear on the high points, and this one could have graded higher. Just sent to PCGS for grading for the first time. For identification there is a minor edge bruise above the I of AMERICA on the reverse. Natural yellow gold in color with no deep or detracting marks to speak of, and that's important as the Carson City double eagles tend to come pretty beat up after brief circulation, as they were issued and circulated in the Wild West era of our history. This splendid example of a high grade 1871-CC will doubtless satisfy any advanced numismatist (PCGS # 8961) Estimated Value $50,000 - UP
Ex The Dr. George Elanjian Collection.
