1905 $5 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Fully untoned gem. As we alluded to in the last Lot, the sale of Proof gold in the half eagle series was at its peak from 1900 to 1905, with a combined mintage for those years of 930 Proofs. For the 1905 issue, only 108 were sold. Over the years a large percentage of the issue has been lost or spoiled through mishandling. The present dazzling Gem has sharp contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices on both obverse and reverse. The radiating luster is accented by sparkling metal flow that displays classic "orange peel" texture. A few random hairlines in the right field are the noticeable distractions and these are so slight they are easily missed unless you are looking for them. A diagnostic for the issue, the top of the 5 in the date has been recut, visible with standard magnification. An important offering of a gemmy cameo example graded by NGC! Pop 5; 3 finer; 2 in 66; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 88500) .
