1889 $5 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo. A nice untoned example. In the new 4 prong NGC holder. Only 45 Proofs struck. This is a sharply struck and deeply mirrored Cameo Proof that catches all of the beauty and essence of Gem quality but for a few faint hairlines visible in the fields, most which are unnoticeable at first glance. Both sides swim in brilliant golden iridescence the devices giving a nice, frosted account of themselves against the mirror background. Estimates by various experts suggest that as few as half of the original Proof coin mintage of any particular year still survives. In this case, about 15 or 20 coins, that is all! It is little wonder that numismatists accord those Proof issues a premium value for their sterling format! Pop 7; 4 finer; 3 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 88484) .
