Lot 1446

1803, 3 over 2. BD-2, R-5. PCGS graded MS-61. Well struck on a clean planchet and with excellent eye appeal. There's a faint cluster of adjustments located on the lower right reverse through AMERICA but these don't affect the central devices. The strike is sharp on all of Liberty's curls and hat, as well as the stars, date and lettering. The overdate feature is sharp to the unaided eye. On the reverse the eagle shows all of his proud breast feathers and the shield bold. No surface marks detract the eye, and the quality is much finer than one would expect for the grade. Precious few of these survive in mint condition, as these half eagles were the work horses of our early gold coinage, and most known examples show ample evidence of circulation on their surfaces. An untoned example with strong visual appeal. A few thin die cracks are noted, commonly seen on this die pairing, and the overdate is sharp on the obverse. Pop 22. (PCGS # 8084) Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000
Ex The Dr. George Elanjian Collection.
