1929. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. CAC Approved. Well struck, frosty and untoned. A total of 662,000 pieces were struck in this year, but most of course were soon melted after 1933 when gold coinage was called in. What is even more curious about this issue, is the fact that no half eagles had been struck since 1916! Then in 1929 coinage resumed but only for this single year. The half eagle denimination had been a major backbone of our coinage since it was introduced back in 1795 and it seems strange that this denomination was essentially suspended when other gold denominations were struck in quantities all theough the 1920s until all gold coinage came to a halt in early 1933.
Collecting this series has challenges, as do all coinage series, but that's what makes this such a great hobby. Collectors compete for the finest examples, and when a sparkling near gem like this appears on the market, numismatists stand up and take notice! Destined for an advanced Indian half eagle collection and an important rarity at this grade level. A coin that should be graded higher. Pop 103; 14 finer, 6 in 64+, 8 in 65 (PCGS # 8533) .
