Lot 1419

1908-D. With motto. NGC graded MS-66. Here is a stellar condition rarity of this first year of the With Motto style reverse, which was adopted in mid 1908. There gorgeous Indian $10 gold pieces were a masterpiece of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the famed sculptor who passed away in August of 1907, shortly after designing these splendid coins. The obverse shows Liberty facing left, wearing an Indian war bonnet with LIBERTY inscribed at its base, she is surrounded by 13 stars and the date is placed below her neck truncation. For the reverse Gobrecht chose a standing eagle which is clutching a banded group of arrows, carefully wrapped in an olive branch with fruit. Above the eagle is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA which follows the curvature of the rim, behind the eagle's back is E PLURIBUS UNUM, and before his chest the Motto IN GOD WE TRUST has been added to this late 1908 issue and continues until the end of the series. Below the eagle is TEN DOLLARS. The surfaces are outstanding in preservation, and this is clearly one the finest certified of this date and mint. A numismatic prize which will be a centerpiece of any advanced collection of these popular Ten Dollar gold coins. Boldly struck with lovely golden toning. Pop 4; 4 finer, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67, 1 in 68. (PCGS # 8860) Estimated Value $25,000 - UP
