Cohan, George M (1878-1942) Songwriter, playwright, actor, singer, and dancer. Oversized Photograph Signed and Inscribed, "To Tom McKnight with sincere good wishes / George M. Cohan," (New York, 1933), 17¾ x 13¾ in. (image is 13½ x 10½ in.). A wonderful portrait of Cohan, taken by Pinchot of NY during the production of Eugene O'Neill's Ah, Wilderness!. Mint condition. Cohan is generally credited with popularizing Broadway and making it a national, rather than regional, form. He was immortalized in the 1942 film, Yankee Doodle Dandy, starring James Cagney as Cohan. Some of his major hits were: "Over There" (written during World War I and for which he was presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor), "You're A Grand Old Flag," "Give My Regards to Broadway," and "I'm A Yankee Doodle Dandy."
