Lot 1384
1843-D $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Only 36,209 struck. A short field line parallels Liberty’s nose though otherwise the light surface abrasion is less noticeable than on many early gold Quarter Eagles from the Southern Branch Mints. Lustrous, with attractive color, what is most attractive to the student of gold coins is how well the main features were struck by the dies. All stars are complete, not rounded or flattened. The hair waves over the ear are the only spot where even the slightest rounding occurs, and the eagle is much above average. Full legends and a bold mintmark. Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000. The Arden Collection.
