Lot 137

1848 N-5 R4+ Repunched 8 PCGS graded AU58. Very attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and show only a few trivial contact marks. The best identifying marks are a tiny tick on the nostril, a thin diagonal nick in the field before the upper lip, and a small planchet flake at the bottom of that nick. Rare LDS, die state f, with a small but clearly defined rim cud break off the end of the wreath stem. The repunching to the right of the second 8 remains sharp. Our grade is EF40. Not in the overall census but tied for CC#7 of those known with the rim cud in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer, 1 in 63, 1 in 64 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $300-UP

Ex Russell Wyatt, Superior 10/1/1985:759-Richard V. Punchard 11/9/1989-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr.-Chris McCawley 12/27/2008-Fred Iskra Collection (includes the Punchard collection envelope).
