Lot 136
1848 N-4 R4+ Boldly Repunched Date PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Frosty steel brown with traces of original mint red showing on both sides. There are very faint hints of an old fingerprint on the chin and in the field before the face, and a very tiny diagonal nick close over star 2. These marks are difficult to see, even with the aid of a good glass, but they can help identify this cent. M-LDS, die state b late. The date repunching is still visible on all 4 digits, including inside the bottoms of both 8’s, but it is no longer present inside the triangle of the 4. There is a small, shallow low spot caused by debris on the die at the hair under star 7 (as struck), plus several other similar low spots inside the wreath (all of which are common on the later states of this variety). A very attractive example of this tough die variety. Our grade is MS60+, tied for CC#2 honors with one other example in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 3 finer, 1 in 63, 2 in 64 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $1,000-UP
