Sale 25

Lot 1357

Great Britain. Proof Sovereign, 1957. Elizabeth II. Young Laureate Head (by Mary Gillick). S-4124 (formerly called S-4125 but now recognized for its finer edge reeding as a variant). WR-449: R4, extremely rare, 11 to 20 known. Proof of Record, expressly struck by law to allow museums to purchase examples from the Royal Mint, however collectors have since purchased both museum duplicates and, in recent years, extras from the source. This splendid specimen came directly from a family who purchased it at issue, in 1957, from the Royal Mint. It came wrapped in cellophane and is virtually perfect, just as it left the dies! Other than Dr Terner and the cataloguer, nobody saw this coin until PCGS graded it. If anything, they under-estimated its quality, for it is a Superb Gem brilliant Proof, having deep mirrors with a light cameo effect. The first Proof sovereign of this reign available to collectors, as the 1953 is non-collectible. Among the finest known, pristine, no doubt of that! Dr Terner's other specimen, also graded PR66 Cameo, realized over $6,600 a year ago. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 7,000.

Realized $7,475
