1910. PCGS graded Proof 66. CAC. PQ. Sure looks better than the assigned grade. Only 682 struck, and this number is believed to by an error as approximately 130-150 pieces exist today, so the mintage was likely about 200 pieces that were released. Furthermore, this date was struck in the much brighter Roman Finish style, so the coins are more of a mustard hue in brightness, like a sunflower. In prior years from 1908-1911 the gold proofs were struck in a darker khaki finish, that proved unpopular with collectors at the time. Famed sculptor Bella Lyon Pratt designed this new incuse style for the quarter eagle and half eagle in 1908. They were a whole new concept in coinage, and like anything new found both favor and fault within the populace. Today they are highly sought after and represent the hopes and dreams of the new 20th Century that was unfolding in this land. The few proofs struck are the most sought after, and with mintages of 100 to 200 pieces, there are not many to go around. Add to this the high gem quality and CAC approval, and you have one of the nicest around today to represent this classic Roman Finish style. Pop 11; 5 finer, 3 in 66+, 1 in 67, 1 in 67+.
