1859-C. NGC graded MS-61. Struck on a rough planchet but much better than often encountered for this dateand mint. The 1859-C Gold dollar has the distinction of being one of the worst struck of the entire series, right up there with the 1855-C! The planchets are often rough as the gold used to coin these was not properly rolled out or was carelessly prepared during the allow blending. Roughness is seen around the denticles of the present coin, but the central fields and devices are smooth and attractive. Rather well struck on Liberty's head, while the reverse has some localized softness as expected. Today there are approximately 125 pieces known, and this example resides near the finer ones! Don't miss out if you are seeking a high end representative of this challenging Charlotte Mint issue. Untoned. Only 5,235 minted. Pop 8; 10 finer, 9 in 62, 1 in 63 (PCGS # 7552) .
