Lot 1268

1899. PCGS graded Proof 64+DCAM PQ. CAC. An amazing coin in hand which commands attention not only for its stunning quality but also for its regal golden hue. Only 84 minted in proof and this one of the finer examples known of an estimated population of approximately 30 pieces today. Retaining both memorable quality and ample contrst, this coin brings with it considerable eye appeal. The double eagle or $20 coin is of course our highest regularly circulating coin of this era, the denomination itself was borne out of the California Gold Rush of the late 1840s and 1850s. Gold came out of the ground and rivers in abundance from that state, and gold coinage increased, topping off with the massive double eagle coin for general circulation. The even larger $50 gold pieces were struck by the teritorial minters only in the early 1850s, but those coins were deemed too large for general circulation in the east. Here is a particularly handsome examle of this ever popular design, and a coin which any numismatist will always cherish. A nice untoned example. Pop 2; 3 finer in 65 (PCGS # 99115) Estimate Value $45,000 - 50,000
Ex. US Gold collection from a prominent midwestern family collection.
