1861-D. PCGS graded AU-53. Very rare not only as the last year of the Dahlonega Mint but also as the key date to the Dahlonega $5 series. A far better than average struck specimen in natural pale greenish color gold and untoned. Only 1,597 struck by the United States, another group was coined by the Confederacy after those troops seized the Dahlonega Mint and coinage continued but the number of pieces coined was not recorded by the Confederacy. Today the 1861-D half eagle is known as the rarest of the Dahlonega Mint issue of the series, with about 75 to 100 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. A prized rarity at this grade level, and especially so this attractive. Pop 11; 23 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8290) Estimate Value $25,000 - UP
