Lot 1203

1838-D. PCGS graded AU-53. Popular as the only Dahlonega Mint Classic Head Half Eagle. This is notable as the Classic Head style was changed to the new Liberty or Gobrecht design in 1839. Thus, branch mint gold half eagles, of the Classic Head design, were only struck in 1838, with the mintmark placed just above the date and close to the truncation line of Liberty's neck and shoulder. Only the Charlotte and Dahlonega branch mints were used to coin this style, New Orleans did not coin these popular half eagles until 1840 after the design had changed. A delightful example of this popular date and mint. Nice and bold exhibting light orangish-golden color. Only 20,583 struck. Pop 24; 53 finer at PCGS (PCGS # 8178) Estimate Value $6,000 - UP

Realized $10,500
