Lot 12
1840 N-9 R3 Large Date MS63. Choice lustrous steel brown with 5-10% of the mint color remaining on the obverse, 20% on the reverse. The only marks are microscopic and include a tiny tick in the middle of the jawline and a barely visible speck of darker toning midway between stars 5 & 6, plus traces of an old fingerprint right of the T in CENT. Great eye appeal, the surfaces covered with unaltered satiny mint luster from fine die flowlines. MDS, die state d. The bisecting obverse die crack is clear but not strong. A choice cent. Tied for CC#2 honors with only 6 confirmed in all mint state grades according to the Grellman condition census. DWH #2852. Estimated Value $1,500-UP. Ex Judge Thomas C. Gaskill-unknown-1980 ANA Sale, lot 1009-1988 ANA Sale, lot 69-Stack’s 1/15/02:822-Chris McCawley 1/06.
