1847 N-26/17 R3 EF40. Sharpness AU55 with faint traces of very fine granularity mixed in with the microscopic die rust always found on the later states of this obverse die. Another patch of similar roughness shows under EN in CENT. No verdigris, and the notable contact marks are a pinprick between the 8 & 4 in the date, another at the dentils left of star 6, and a small rim nick over star 7. Nicely recolored glossy light olive and steel brown with some chocolate toning in protected areas of the reverse. LDS, die state e, with a very strong rim cud break at OF-A (Newcomb’s #17), and the right end of this cud slants up to the right (the later stage of this cud). Tied for CC#1 honors among a couple dozen known in this die state. Removed from an NCS slab graded Uncirculated details environmental damage (NCS label #5077440-083 included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance). Estimated Value $350-UP
