Lot 1174

1861-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. Low mintage of 6,879. Lovely golden toning on both sides. Some mint luster still evident. A halfhearted impression was left by the striking of the stars and some hair curls, as well as the eagle, but the dies that made this also left behind plenty of mint frostiness in the fields and throughout the main devices, frostiness rarely seen on this key issue.

A popular low-mintage rarity, one of only 6,879 examples of the date struck during the final year of Charlotte Mint operations, the sudden closing of the mint being caused by the advent of the War for Southern Secession, and the seizure of the Charlotte facility by Confederate troops five days later, on April 20, 1861.

For the 1861-C Very Fine to Extremely Fine is typical, with About Uncirculated or finer pieces being quite rare. The present coin represents a highly important opportunity. Pop 6; 2 in 61; 1 in 63. (PCGS # 8289) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 11,000.

Realized $12,075
