1861-D. PCGS graded EF-45. With the single exception of the 1849-C Open Wreath variety, this is the rarest U.S. Gold Dollar. Unusual bold strike for this notorious poorly made issue. The obverse die was used to strike the 1860-D coins, with the weak U and N of UNITED, diagnostic to these dates. The surfaces show scattered marks on both sides as expected for a lightly circulated Gold Dollar and untoned. This is generally considered to be the key date to the series as mentioned.
Remarkably, these were struck by the Confederacy in May of 1861 after the outbreak of hostilities. While the exact number coined is unknown, it is believed that only 1,000 pieces were struck. Today there are approximately 75 pieces known in all grades. Based on the recorded mintage of the 1860-D, and similar survival rates, the 1861-D Gold Dollar has earned its place as the rarest collectible Gold Dollar.
