Lot 1117

1855-D. PCGS graded EF-45. Well struck, except for the numeral 8 in the date as usually seen. Popular Key Date and only 1,811 coins minted of which merely 80 examples are estimated to have survived. Douglas Winter noted in his Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: "A high-grade example of this issue with above average eye appeal is almost unheard of." The present example is an appealing EF45 coin which we believe has a nicer strike and fewer problems than most. (Dahlonega and Charlotte gold dollars of this era have many interesting idiosyncrasies--these giving each issue a personality all its own.)

The specialist is advised to discard conventional wisdom concerning price levels and to "go for it!" Otherwise, a generation of collectors may come and go without a comparable opportunity. Pop 5; 36 finer (PCGS # 7534) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.
The William H & Beuelaress K. Helem Collection.

Realized $16,675
