Lot 1113

1854 Pattern Cent. Bronze, plain edge. Judd-161. Pollock-187. Rarity 4. PCGS graded Proof 64 Brown. Uneven chocolate toning on both sides perhaps reflecting the bronze alloy. The mint began experiments with making a smaller sized cent, as the current Large Cents were viewed as too large and cumbersome for daily commerce. For the obverse the usual head of Liberty was employed, with the date below. No stars are present, thus the obverse has a cameo appearance. For the reverse the same style elements were used as seen on the current Large cent, but smaller in size. Hence the devices are more elegant and less cumbersome in appearance. This has always been a popular transitional pattern coin. Pop 45; 26 finer at PCGS for all colors. (PCGS # 11663) Estimate Value $1,900 - 2,000

Realized $1,440
