Lot 1093

1878-S. PCGS graded MS-64. Scarce date with a mintage of 140,000 pieces, but for some reason most of these disappeared long ago, today it is estimated by CoinFacts that only 300 examples exist. That's far fewer than one would expect given the recorded mintage. Perhaps many were melted and never released? Today we probably won't find out unless there's some record of what became of the majority of the 1878-S quarters. This one is quite attractive, and approaches the gem grade in terms of preservation and eye appeal. A condition rarity near the top of those known, and a downright rare issue today. Well struck and with light toning. Pop 8; 5 finer, 2 in 65, 1 in 65+, 2 in 66. (PCGS # 5510) Value $4,500 - 5,000
