Lot 108

1847 N-19 R1 Repunched 84 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous light steel brown with 5% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. Attractive satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. Would rate a slightly higher grade except for a small chip out of the planchet on the rim left of star 1 and another on the rim at star 5, both as struck. A small spot of darker toning shows at the dentils over the left side of star 7 and one more is on the left side of the first S in STATES. E-MDS, die state a late. The repunching on the 4 is clear and the die lines at ONE CENT remain visible. A beautiful cent. Our grade is MS62+, very close to MS63, and CC#4 behind a trio of very slightly finer examples in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $600-UP

Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions 7/31/1993:121-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:402-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/30/2011:208-Fred Iskra Collection (includes the Brown and Holmes collection envelopes and both lot tickets).
