1799/8 Bust $1. 15 Stars PCGS EF45. PCGS graded EF-45. Even grey toning which offsets the fields from the devices in a most handsome manner. The surfaces are smooth and attractive too, as there are minimal signs of handling. The strike is decent, with bold definition on Liberty's curls and the eagle. Struck a trifle off center, with thin denticles on the left side, much longer on the right side, but this does not effect the design.

This popular variety is highly collectible as it offers two unusual features, the obverse of course has the overdate, with the final 9 punched over a previous 8, then the reverse has the blundered star count over the eagle, where 15 stars were engraved, then the mistake was noticed and the engraver covered over two of the extra stars by enlarging two of the clouds to cover the stars! The clouds on the far left and far right were expanded with considerable engraving skill, but telltail star points remain poking out of the enlarged clouds when carefully examined. This important Guide Book variety is a popular and historic example of the early days at the Philadelphia Mint. Pop 32; 79 finer (PCGS # 6883) Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400

Ex. US Gold from a prominent midwestern family collection.
