Lot 1002

1896 $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 64. Old green holder. Lovely rich gold and orange colors. Has a nice cameo look. Highly radiant and largely bright with warm golden orange toning on both sides. Incredibly well struck, even for a Proof, with razor-sharp hair, coronet, and stars on the obverse, equally bold eagle and shield, and complete "squared-off" lettering in the devices. The details are further enhanced by the rolling luster that layers the devices. The resemblance between the devices and the mirror fields to an ancient Roman "cameo" gem is remarkable, with everything, including the eye-appeal, absolutely complete! Pop 13; 9 in 65; 5 in 66. Only 132 struck in proof. (PCGS # 7922) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

Realized $8,050
